Classical Dressage, Liberty, and Self-development with Bethany Tuskey
Saturday Oct 09, 2021
Saturday Oct 09, 2021
Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast
An Interview with Bethany Tuskey on classical dressage, liberty, and self-development.
“Keep Moving Forward!”
Bethany’s love of horses began at an early age. She now has over 15 years experience working with horses and has been instructing and training for over 10 years. Bethany has dedicated her life to learning the art of horsemanship from master horse trainers. She has studied classical dressage, liberty work, work in hand, and long reining and has recently taken up the challenge of learning vaulting. Bethany has taken what she has learned from other trainers as well the horses, and combined in with her Christian faith to create a unique style of training based on love for the horse, the desire to help her horses to become better versions of themselves, and the desire to build partnerships with her horses based on mutual trust and respect.
In addition to dressage work, Bethany is able to take her partnership with her horses to a whole new level by working with them at liberty, where there is nothing connecting her to the horse and the horse has the freedom to do as he wants. Working with horses at liberty creates a relationship with your horse that will transcend anything you have experienced before.
Bethany enjoys performing with her Andalusians at various shows and exhibitions. It is her goal to share her unique training style and show people how they too can take their relationship with their horse to a whole new level.
𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬:
Bethany’s start with horses from training wild mustangs, to practising classical dressage.
Her relationship-focussed training philosophy with horses combining groundwork, liberty, and classical dressage.
How a “difficult” horse lead her to reflect on herself and dive deep into self-development
Bethany’s holistic approach of body, mind, and spirit to help horses be happy
The value of investing in your learning
Who inspires her and what she is currently learning including her recommended horse books
The secret to Bethany’s success so far with horses, and the one message she would like all horse people to know
PLUS so much more!
Bethany is a heart-centred and open-minded horse trainer. We share a love of self-develoement and know how important this is in horses and in life.

Intrinsic Motivation for Healthy Movement with Kathy Sierra
"Nature as an ally instead of adversary”
Kathy Sierra has ten years working in human sports medicine as a training director in Los Angeles.
She then went back to school for computer science, working after as a game developer and software architect. Kathy eventually worked in Hollywood and taught “interaction design for intrinsic motivation” at UCLA Entertainment Studies and Universal Studio, and went on to create an educational book series in technology that sold over 2 million copies.
Horses have been a lifelong passion, but not her profession. However, when her beloved horse Draumur was nearly euthanized, Kathy felt it was her fault, so she took everything in her background on motivation, learning psychology, neuroscience, and movement science, and synthesized a path forward to help him when conventional methods failed.
Eventually other people saw them and began to ask for help with their horses, so she created the philosophy and principles of Intrinzen. She lives on a small island near the border of US/Canada with her husband and 6 horses.
𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬:
Kathy’s start with horses and how her career in sports biomechanics influenced her horsemanship
Psychology of intrinsic motivation for movement in horses
The story of Draumur, a horse who once refused to move, and who Kathy considers the founder of everything she does now with horse & movement
Using negative & positive reinforcement without diminishing intrinsic motivation
The challenge of Vavi- of helping a horse find badass movement!
The birth of Intrinzen! And Kathy’s tips on how to get started with this way of training
What could be really happening when you think your horse is “testing you”
Setting up your environment to create intrinsic motivation for movement
Kathy’s views on healthy horses and what healthy movement is
Creativity, experimentation, & autonomy in training horses
PLUS so much more!
Kathy is extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, and polarizing with her views on horses, horse training, & biomechanics.

He grew up listening to country music and dreaming of riding horses. He is a self-taught horseman and doesn’t believe in *one* method when it comes to horsemanship. However, he started this journey because of Buck, the movie, and because he stumbled upon videos of people playing the Parelli 7 games. But he mostly learnt everything he knows today thanks to his mare Quincy and his horse BlackPearlHe is a true lover of the old vaquero traditions and doesn't just ride only to ride but with tiny achievable goals for his horses and himself. He is also fascinated by social media, or all media. Also loves entertaining people by pulling their heartstring or making them laugh. His goal is to show the world the beauty of the relationship that bonds humans to their horses, if only people can learn to earn the trust of their horses.
